Musing Monday

This week’s musing asks…

Do you tend to read to the end of a chapter or can you stop anywhere?

This about sums it up for me…

I need to make me a bookmark like this, but I usually fail to put the thing in the book until I find the bookmark laying on the floor later.  I don’t need to finish the chapter before putting a book down, but I do like to be in a good stopping place.

Musing Mondays

This week’s musing asks…

Would you choose to review a book if its description sounded interesting but the cover was terrible? [thanks to The Bookish Brunette for the idea for today's MM question!]

I think if the book looks interesting enough, I would read it despite its cover.  I do love a good/pretty/shiny book cover though!  I would probably add a comment about changing the cover in my review. ;)

This week’s musing asks… Do you judge a book by its cover?

Of course! Who doesn’t?? And these days book covers are truly works of art!  I am usually initially drawn in by the cover and if the storyline intrigues me, I’ll usually pick it up, or at least add it to the wish list.  I will admit though I have been disappointed by a few books who have GORGEOUS covers, but the book itself just didn’t deliver. :(   A for the marketing team though!

This week’s musing asks…

How often do you read a book, just because you’re in the mood to read it? (not because you’re obligated to for a book club, or a challenge, or for review)

For the most part I always read books that I choose and I read them because I want to.  So far, all of the books I review for publishers are ones I have picked out to read because they sounded interesting to me.  I have yet to receive any unsolicited books and really try to limit myself to books that I think I will enjoy.  Review books, as well as books that I have purchased, sometimes turn out to not be so interesting.  So in that respect, I do feel obligated to finish books that I have “promised” reviews for.  I have really struggled in the past with finishing a book that I don’t find interesting and submitting my review for it when I didn’t like it.  Books that don’t spark any real feelings for me are always the hardest for me to review because I don’t feel like I have anything interesting to add to the mix and I don’t really enjoy having “bad” reviews on my blog.  I want to tell you about the books I loved, not the ones I didn’t.

But overall, I don’t ever feel obligated to read something I don’t want to – even if I miss a book’s release date or the end of a challenge or some other pending deadline.  Maybe that’s unprofessional of me as a book blogger, but I believe in blogging without obligation.  You shouldn’t have to apologize for not blogging or for being busy with your real life.  I do always request books with a good intention and heart and try my very very best to honor those obligations, but I don’t beat myself up if I fail in those intentions because in the end, I read and blog for fun.  I think that is what keeps things fresh; you can always tell when a blogger/reviewer is not really enjoying what they do.

Monday Musings…

This week’s musing asks…

Do you like looking at other people’s bookshelves?

I LOVE looking at other people’s bookshelves! I find it very fascinating, whether it’s family or friends, or my booky internet friends! :)   I love seeing what they are reading and I know a few of my friends are amazed when they see my shelves (including my husband!). I’m totally addicted to watching bookshelf tours on youtube and secretly want to post my own one day!  All those pretty pretty books!

I used to love looking through all the volumes on my grandmother’s bookshelves when I was younger. I probably spent hours and hours looking at all the books and I just knew there was a jewel, a perfect novel in there somewhere that was just waiting for me to find.  I’m totally blaming my book addiction on her now!  I love having my book shelves full and when people take notice and are actually interested in what books I’m reading, I definitely get excited.  All those great adventures on a shelf, just waiting for me to find them!  Happy reading!

If you are interested in looking at my shelves, I don’t mind if you peruse…I posted a pic here about a year ago.  If you click on the picture, you can zoom in to see the titles.
