This week’s musing asks…
How often do you read a book, just because you’re in the mood to read it? (not because you’re obligated to for a book club, or a challenge, or for review)
For the most part I always read books that I choose and I read them because I want to. So far, all of the books I review for publishers are ones I have picked out to read because they sounded interesting to me. I have yet to receive any unsolicited books and really try to limit myself to books that I think I will enjoy. Review books, as well as books that I have purchased, sometimes turn out to not be so interesting. So in that respect, I do feel obligated to finish books that I have “promised” reviews for. I have really struggled in the past with finishing a book that I don’t find interesting and submitting my review for it when I didn’t like it. Books that don’t spark any real feelings for me are always the hardest for me to review because I don’t feel like I have anything interesting to add to the mix and I don’t really enjoy having “bad” reviews on my blog. I want to tell you about the books I loved, not the ones I didn’t.
But overall, I don’t ever feel obligated to read something I don’t want to – even if I miss a book’s release date or the end of a challenge or some other pending deadline. Maybe that’s unprofessional of me as a book blogger, but I believe in blogging without obligation. You shouldn’t have to apologize for not blogging or for being busy with your real life. I do always request books with a good intention and heart and try my very very best to honor those obligations, but I don’t beat myself up if I fail in those intentions because in the end, I read and blog for fun. I think that is what keeps things fresh; you can always tell when a blogger/reviewer is not really enjoying what they do.
